Soaking up the Summer Sun!
Warm summer days and nights are perfect for entertaining family and friends outdoors. Pool parties, post sport celebrations or just getting together for a pleasant meal.
As a sports fan, I have enjoyed watching the Euro Cup soccer (or football, as we Europeans would say). I look forward to cheering on Canada’s athletes as they compete at the Olympics in London, England this summer.
We’ll be celebrating and getting outside this month at the annual Orangeville Founder’s Fair. Be sure to plan a stroll downtown to take in the festivities, and stop by the store for our cash and carry items in the tent, as well as the specials throughout the store.
During the summer months it is nice to relax and stay cool. In our kitchen toys section, we’re sharing some fun tools for making frozen treats. We have included an easy recipe for an ice cold coffee frappé.
Remember, in Canada, summer is short and sweet, so be sure to soak in as much sun as possible while it’s still here. Enjoy your time with family and friends, and keep cool!

Best wishes,

The Real Crème Brulée
- 750 ml (3 cups) 35% cream
- 1 Vanilla pod
- 8 egg yolks
- 150 g (5.25 oz) caster or fine sugar
- 40 g (1.5 oz) brown sugar, cane sugar or vanilla sugar for topping
Pour the cream into a saucepan.
Split the vanilla pod with a knife and scrape the seeds into the cream.
Place over the heat until the cream reaches simmering point.
Turn off the heat and leave to infuse for 15 minutes.
Whisk the egg yolks with the caster sugar until the mixture becomes light in colour.
Add the warm cream without whisking, to avoid any froth.
Filter the mixture through a strainer.
Leave to rest, then remove any froth from the surface.
Fill the six dishes with the mixture and cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes at 200F.
No water bath (bain-marie) needed.
Just before serving, sprinkle with brown sugar and caramelize immediately with the torch.
Crème brulée can be made ahead of time, and served cold.
