Healthy Potato Chips and Fries

With March break just around the corner, many parents will soon be faced with a house full of kids looking for things to do - and things to snack on!

We’re pleased to feature, as our product of the month, Swissmar’s new potato chip makers. Its simple design and application allows you to feel comfortable letting the kids experiment in the kitchen with different types of chips - with healthy fruits and veggies!

We’re featuring the much talked about Actifry from T-fal; a great machine that can make golden and delicious French fries with just 1 tablespoon of oil!

In January, I attended the CGTA trade show in Toronto, where I saw many new and innovative designs, like the Kienna K-cup adaptor. We’ve just received eleven flavours of their coffee directly from Calgary - a great way to save money, and be more environmentally friendly (no more plastic!).

I look forward to sharing my new kitchen finds with you in the coming months!

Did you know?

  • Potatoes are the fourth most important agricultural crop in the world, behind wheat, rice and corn.
  • Potatoes are the only major crop that contain the majority of vitamins humans need to survive. That’s why potatoes become a staple in hard economic times.
  • The modern potato chip was invented in 1853 in Saratoga Springs, NY, after a restaurant patron repeatedly sent his order back to the kitchen, claiming his French fries were too thick.
  • The Irish Potato Famine of 1845-1852 was caused by diseased potato crop. One third of the Irish population, at the time, was entirely dependent on potatoes for food.
  • Canadian Edward Asselbergs invented the first form of instant mashed potatoes in 1962.
  • Marie Antoinette was known to often don a crown of potato blossoms.
  • Introduced in 1952, Mr. Potato Head was the first children’s toy ever to be advertised on television.
  • The average 19th century daily Irish diet consisted of 5 lbs. of potatoes and 1 quart of milk - and it contained all essential nutrients!
