Römertopf Clay Bakers of Germany

Clay Baker Cooking

Now that the most indulgent, sparkly, cluttered and busy time of the year is behind us (or ahead of us depending on how you look at things) it’s time to tidy up and start a fresh New Year with great intentions and a clean slate.

We routinely start our year, at Kitchen To The Table, with a healthy recommendation for the kitchen. Ta-da! The Römertopf Clay Bakers of Germany!

Clay Bakers avoid over-cooking, while eliminating the need for added fats. Using a pre-soaked clay pot, before placing in the oven, ensures the vessel creates and maintains moisture, allowing recipes to cook to perfection, while preventing nutrients from escaping. Voila! Healthy and delicious cooking to take you through the winter.

Joseph Joseph IntelligentWaste: Garbage Bin

Around this clean-up time of year I get the urge to purge and sort as we typically spend more time inside. Some people might reorganize the kitchen drawers, clean out the pantry and de-clutter in general. I’m looking for ways to make the household run more smoothly and know I’ve found something wonderful: Joseph Joseph IntelligentWaste: Garbage Bin

Joseph Joseph IntelligentWaste: Garbage Bin

Joseph Joseph has introduced a completely new category from Joseph Joseph, specifically created to cater to the various waste and recycling needs of modern life.
This waste bin is occupying the same space as a conventional kitchen bin but Totem offers many more functions without compromising on capacity. The general trash area holds 36 litres, the removable green waste bin has a 4 litre capacity and the multi-purpose drawer holds a generous 24 litres. The lid features an odour filter compartment so things stay fresh.

The multi-purpose drawer can be customized depending on what you use it for. Use it as one big compartment for general recycling or divide the area with the included divider to separate recyclables or household items, etc.

Dimensions: 60L – 40cm(W) x 30cm(D) x 80cm(H), (106cm(H) with lid open)

OXO Good Grips GreenSavers

Did you know that on average 20% of the produce we buy is thrown away due to spoilage? There are a number of factors as to why produce spoils:

  1. Fruits and vegetables produce ethylene gas and an overexposure to this gas causes over ripening, thus rotten food.
  2. Produce stored in containers, bags or crispers where there is no airflow will spoil sooner than later.
  3. Fresh food requires a perfect balance of humidity to stay fresh and crisp and delicious. To make matters more complicated, different foods require different levels of humidity.

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 2 cups cabbage, chopped
  • ½ cup white cooking wine (optional)
  • 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 lb Potatoes, dice
  • 1 cup peas
  • Salt and pepper and spices to taste

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat until simmering. Add the onion, season with salt and pepper, cook, stirring occasionally, until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the carrots and garlic, cook, stirring occasionally, until the garlic is fragrant, about 2 minutes.
  3. Add the celery and, if using, any additional vegetables and herbs and spices of your choice and cook an additional 5 minutes. If using, add the wine (for some acidity) and cook, stirring occasionally, until the alcohol has reduced by about half, about 2 minutes.
  4. Add the broth, potatoes and peas. Let the soup come to a boil, then reduce the heat to low simmer, uncovered, until the potatoes are done, about 15 to 25 minutes.
