Knife Skills: Sharpening vs honing
No matter what you paid for your knives or where you purchased them from they will all eventually lose their edge. It is up to the user to maintain that edge and that means honing it regularly and sharpening as needed. The difference between honing and sharpening is vast. When you sharpen you are removing metal from the blade to grind a new edge; honing realigns the edge after the blade has dulled from use and returns it (or very close to) the original condition. For best results hone regularly to sharpen less often.

Breville Small Appliance Demo
Saturday November 26, 11am-2pm
What a fun day to stop by the store! This is a great event to attend if you are interested in seeing first hand how a Breville Countertop Appliance works. A Breville chef will be present and he will be using Breville products exclusively. Chef will create delicious samples and will be able to answer any of your burning questions.
Breville Waffle Pro, 4-slice with no mess moat and waffle IQ. There’s a lot of pressure put on this waffle iron to perform. It has an IQ! You tell the waffle maker how you like things done and it does just what you ask it to do. Choose your waffle style (classic, buttermilk, chocolate or Belgian) and then the preferred colour from light to dark. An especially nice feature is the wrap around moat to catch overflow so that there’s no running mess.
Breville Chocolate Waffle Recipe
Did you know that waffle batter doubles in size while cooking, which causes batter to ooze out of the mold?
The Breville wide wrap-around moat catches and cooks overflow for easy cleanup.
- 4 tbsp. butter
- 2 ounces bittersweet chocolate
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- ½ cup sugar
- 1½ tsp. baking powder
- ½ tsp. salt
- 1½ cups milk
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. instant coffee
- ½ tsp. vanilla
- Melt the butter and bittersweet chocolate in a microwave or over a double-boiler.
- Whisk dry ingredients together in a medium bowl.
- Whisk milk, eggs, instant coffee and vanilla together in a small bowl to combine
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour the milk mixture into the well and whisk until the ingredients are just combined. Add the melted butter and chocolate and whisk to combine. Do not over-mix the batter (it will be slightly lumpy).
- Select CHOCOLATE setting on your Breville waffle maker or similar on your waffle maker and the desired darkness setting.
- Preheat the waffle maker until the LCD turns orange and 'HEATING' disappears.
- Pour approximately ½ cup of batter evenly on the center of each waffle square. Close the lid but keep the locking latch open.
- At the end of the cooking cycle, open the lid carefully and remove your waffles. Repeat with remaining batter.
Serves: 8 waffles
Recipe: Light and fluffy waffles
