Home Made Apple Turnovers

  • 1 pound green apples, peeled and diced
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • Pinch nutmeg
  • 1 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry thawed
  • Cinnamon sugar to garnish

Directions:

  1. Place apples into a saucepan with cinnamon stick and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally 9-10 minutes, until apples are softened and the water has evaporated.
  2. Stir in sugar, nutmeg and butter and continue cooking until thickened and completely soft and broken down. Chill until cold.
  3. Cut each pastry sheet into four squares. Fill half of each square with a heaping tablespoon of the apple mixture. Brush the edges with water and fold over pastry to form a triangle.
  4. Using a fork press the edges down to seal.
  5. Fill fryer with 4 quarts of oil. Preheat to 375ºF and fry two turnovers at a time for 2.5 minutes. (Or use a pot with high sides and use a thermometer to gage the temperature)
  6. Drain on paper towel and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar to garnish.
